HOW WE DO IT - Case Studies
City of Calgary
Objective:
To help assess, define and plan the development of a data warehouse
Solution:
An enterprise data warehouse plan that, once implemented, will offer an integrated and scalable business solution for storing and retrieving data The City of Calgary is the municipal government of Calgary, Alberta—a dynamic Western Canadian city with a population approaching one million people.
The City decided to implement a Business Intelligence system for the Building Regulations Division of the Development and Building Approvals Business Unit. The City recognized that improved analysis would increase productivity for the division and improve its service offerings to the public.
To address these concerns, The City engaged Quadrus to help assess, define and plan the development of the first data mart with the ultimate goal being an Enterprise Data Warehouse. Quadrus assisted The City in selecting and implementing "best of breed" technologies, offering The City a truly integrated and scalable business solution.
The data mart is beneficial to the Building Regulations Division on many levels. Permit revenue analysis will become more efficient and speedy. Information accuracy will improve since all data will be integrated into a single repository and will be obtained from specific known sources. The system will also provide an intuitive interface, which will allow business analysts to easily create data queries and format query results into reports for other clients.
Scalability was a top priority when providing this solution since, over time, all The City's business units will be integrated into this Enterprise Data Warehouse system. The architecture is also scalable as an enterprise back office so as the City moves towards an enterprise portal front-end, it can easily expose a wider range of information to its employees, partners and the public.
