HOW WE DO IT - Case Studies
ENMAX Energy Corporation
Objective:
To develop a Business Intelligence solution to allow ENMAX's Finance Division to better reconcile data in the settlement process
Solution:
Together with ENMAX, Quadrus built and implemented a robust and scalable Business Intelligence solution using Microsoft's SQL Server Accelerator for Business Intelligence In January 2001, the Alberta Government deregulated local electricity markets. Deregulation altered the paradigm in which Alberta electricity markets operate and settle, and created the need for various distributors, marketers and retailers of electricity to definitively track and report energy generation and usage.
ENMAX Energy Corporation is a marketer and retailer of electricity in Alberta, selling electricity produced by various distributors. ENMAX must periodically reconcile energy received from their distributors against consumption from ENMAX's clients. This settlement process requires hourly consumption data even though most of ENMAX's customers have meters that are read only monthly. Hourly consumption values can be estimated by applying consumption trend patterns to monthly measurements, although characterizing such trends is difficult.
Quadrus was engaged to develop a Business Intelligence solution that would allow ENMAX's Finance Division to better reconcile data in the settlement process. Quadrus was chosen specifically because of its expertise in building Enterprise Business Intelligence solutions and leveraging Microsoft's SQL Server Accelerator for Business Intelligence—a brand new rapid application development tool.
Quadrus' BI solution is used by key financial business analysts, allowing them to better analyze consumer consumption usage patterns. Business users use the familiar Microsoft Excel interface to quickly access and analyze relevant and timely information. The Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) engine—customized with multidimensional design—provides ENMAX with an efficient data storage system, improved query performance and heightened analytical capabilities. Quadrus' solution successfully extracts and models relevant data such that trends are accurately characterized, thus enabling the settlement process.
2002 Microsoft Certified Partner Award Winner – For this work with ENMAX, Quadrus was selected by Microsoft as the winner of the worldwide Business Intelligence Solution of the Year Award.
