Project Management vs. Soft Skills

Presented to CIPS Calgary Luncheon
Presented by Mike Griffiths, Senior Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
March 1, 2006
Projects are delivered by people for people; this is why attitudes and behaviours make all the difference to the success of a project. Yet most project management courses omit the development of soft skills.

Team member contribution is not binary, but varies on a scale ranging from undermining and resistance at one extreme, through passive compliance and active participation, onto committed dedication and passionate innovation at the other extreme. Likewise, sponsors and business stakeholder perceptions vary widely. In an environment of collaboration and cooperation, large obstacles can be overcome and many new benefits realized. Alternatively, poor communications and alienation can result in the rejection of well executed projects.

In light of these challenges, how can project managers stack-the-deck in their favour to get better team contribution and more understanding sponsors? The answer lies in soft skills. This presentation will examine the leadership and soft skills that Project Managers require, along with the traditional Project Management tools, to help them and their teams be more successful.

Evolutionary Requirements in an Agile World

Presented to CIPS Calgary, Business Analysts Special Interest Group.
Presented by Michael McCullough, Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
December 1, 2005
Many organizations are investigating or adopting iterative, incremental and agile approaches to their software development process. These approaches imply a change to the roles and deliverables for project members. To be successful, business analysts must adapt to new roles on projects. "In Evolutionary Requirements in an Agile World" we survey these changes and explore the opportunities and challenges that business analysts will face.

IT Trends: The Agile Shift

Presented at CIPS Calgary Luncheon
Presented by Mike Griffiths, Senior Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
March 2, 2005
Over the past few years there has been an emerging shift in IT project management processes and practices, from the traditional defined approach towards iterative and adaptive methodologies. Many organizations are now looking at agile approaches, drawn by the claims of improved productivity, higher quality, better ROI and greater customer satisfaction. However, many of the techniques advocated in agile methods appear contrary to the traditional "plan-based" project management best practices.

This presentation reviews the foundation and historical application of traditional approaches and then highlights the emergence of iterative and adaptive approaches. It summarizes the leading development lifecycles, showcasing how agile techniques can be used effectively alongside traditional management approaches to tackle the challenges of software projects.

Managing Agile Projects

Presented at CIPS Calgary Project Management Special Interest Group
Presented by Mike Griffiths, Senior Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
November 20, 2003
Many organizations are now looking at Agile development approaches, drawn by the claims of improved productivity, higher quality, better ROI and greater customer satisfaction. Many software development projects today are sufficiently different from physical engineering-based projects and, therefore, construction-inspired project controls are no longer the most appropriate means for management. Principles of PMBOK and Agile development were compared and contrasted and suggested alternatives to the traditional project planning, execution and tracking techniques were provided.

.NET Class Libraries from A to Z

MSDN Webcast
Presented by Grant Albrecht, Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
May 30, 2003
This session explored the extensive Microsoft .NET Framework Class Library. The .NET Framework provides a rich set of interfaces, as well as abstract and concrete (non-abstract) classes. The .NET Framework types are the foundation on which .NET applications, components, and controls are built. In this webcast, Quadrus provided an overview of what functionality the classes offer, as well as demonstrations on how to leverage these thousands of classes with little work.

Business Integration: Platform Interoperability Using Web Services

Presented at Convergence 2003
Presented by:
Grant Albrecht, Technical Director, Quadrus Development Inc.
Roland Davis, Technology Engineer, Sun Microsystems
May 5, 2003
In this session we looked at how the .NET and J2EE frameworks interoperate in the implementation and consumption of web services. Specifically, we explored when and why to use web services and examined the roles of XML, SOAP, WSDL and UDDI. A working example was provided to fully understand Java and .NET applications' interoperability using web services.
