QUADRUS MEMBER TO PRESENT AT CIPS CALGARY LUNCH - MARCH 1, 2006:
PROJECT MANAGEMENT MECHANICS VS. SOFT SKILLS

About the Presentation:
Projects are delivered by people for people; this is why attitudes and behaviours make all the difference to the success of a project. Yet most project management courses omit the development of soft skills.

Team member contribution is not binary, but varies on a scale ranging from undermining and resistance at one extreme, through passive compliance and active participation, onto committed dedication and passionate innovation at the other extreme. Likewise, sponsors and business stakeholder perceptions vary widely. In an environment of collaboration and cooperation, large obstacles can be overcome and many new benefits realized. Alternatively, poor communications and alienation can result in the rejection of well executed projects.

In light of these challenges, how can project managers stack-the-deck in their favour to get better team contribution and more understanding sponsors? The answer lies in soft skills. This presentation will examine the leadership and soft skills that Project Managers require, along with the traditional Project Management tools, to help them and their teams be more successful.

About the Presenter:
Mike Griffiths, PMP, is a project manager and trainer for Quadrus Development Inc. who is always looking for better ways to deliver projects. After realizing some time ago that the people in projects were "probably quite important" Mike has been on a leadership and team empowerment quest to achieve more successful projects. Mike is a contributor to the PMBOK 3rd Edition, speaker at the 2004 & 2005 PMI Global Congress conferences and instructor for the PMI SeminarsWorld training program.
